So what’s it like working at LOCOG right now?
I most definitely have enjoyed my time with LOCOG, and am very glad to have the opportunity to play a hand in London’s Games. I’m very excited about what the organisation will be doing over the next three years, and am very proud of what we’ve accomplished thus far.
What’s been your best experience so far?
It would have to be watching the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games on the big screen in Canary Wharf alongside all of the other LOCOG staff members. The entire organisation was extremely excited about the show the Beijing organisers were putting on, and thrilled at the thought of putting on our own version of the event in three years time!
What are you working on at the moment?
I sit within the Information Knowledge Management (IKM) space, located within LOCOG’s Strategy and Programme Management (SPM) team. IKM is responsible for a number of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems, common coding, records and archives management, LOCOG’s information and knowledge legacy, as well as a range of planning and operations tools.
One of the best things about working at LOCOG on the SPM team is the fact that new and (at times) unexpected pieces of work seem to constantly pop up. For example, prior to the Beijing Games we were tasked with developing a system to allocate the tickets and access passes available to LOCOG as part of their official Beijing delegation. I supported in both the design and implementation of the system we used to manage the allocations, as well as constructing a complementary set of recommended processes.
We’re really just beginning to carve out IKM’s space within the organisation. There are many functions which could be considered to be part of IKM that are sitting within other parts of LOCOG. As such, over the next 2-3 months, we’ll be looking to more carefully define our scope, and hopefully take over additional responsibilities as a result.
What’s your favourite Olympic moment?
It would have to be the performance of the American gymnast Kerri Strug at the team all-around competition at the Atlanta Games. Despite having a badly damaged ankle, she helped to clinch the gold medal for the US with an amazing performance on the vault.
