Rules

Conditions of entry

1. The competition will open at 9:00am on 5 October 2009 and will close at 12.00pm on 26 February 2010 (“the Closing Time”).  No late entries will be accepted.

2. The competition is open to all individual full and part time students who are enrolled at a UK university on either an under-graduate or post-graduate course ("a Student") on or before the Closing Time.

3. Each entry must:

  • Be submitted via email to businesscompetition@deloitte.co.uk
  • Be accompanied by a fully completed entry form (downloadable here) 
  • Be submitted in a pdf, doc or docx format
  • Be written in English
  • Not exceed 2,012 words (excluding footnotes/references)
  • State the total word count at the end of the entry
  • Be written in font Arial, size 10, double line spaced
  • Include a heading stating the Student’s name and university
  • Include a footer with relevant page numbers
  • Be properly referenced with all citation using either the Harvard or numeric referencing method.

Any failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification from the competition.

4. Each entry must:

  • Be the sole creation and original work of the Student
  • Not have been previously published
  • Not be plagiarised in any way.

Any failure to comply with these rules shall result in disqualification from the competition.

5. Only one entry may be submitted per Student.

6. Each Student should keep a copy of their entry.  No entries submitted shall be returned. 

7. Any Student who has a close relative (parent or sibling) who works in Deloitte’s London 2012 team is not entitled to enter this competition

The prizes

8. Deloitte LLP (“Deloitte”), acting in its absolute discretion, shall choose the winners and the winners shall be announced at the National Final on 11 May 2010. 

9. There are three prizes available for the competition:

  • A first prize of - (i) two British Airways economy class return flights from the UK to Singapore (on a mainline schedule service, subject to availability) to be used on or around 14 to 26 August 2010 (which are the times of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games); (ii) accommodation for two people in the Holiday Inn, Atrium Singapore (part of the IHG Group) whilst in Singapore; and (iii) 2 weeks of paid work experience at Deloitte’s office with the London 2012 team at a date to be agreed with Deloitte
  • A second prize of flights from the UK with British Airways to the value of £500 to a destination of your choice, subject to availability
  • A third prize of flights from the UK with British Airways to the value of £250 to a destintation of your choice, subject to availability.

10. There is no cash or credit alternative to any of the prizes.

11. Each prize is awarded to a Student and that Student has no right to transfer the prize to any other person. 

12. Deloitte reserves the right to substitute any prize or any part of a prize in its absolute discretion without notice. 

13. A Student shall only be eligible to receive a prize if s/he has not been disqualified from the competition.

14. Deloitte reserves the right not to award any prizes if, acting in its absolute discretion, it decides that no entries merit a prize. Deloitte’s decision whether or not to award any prizes shall be final.

15. The work experience element of the first prize shall be subject to Deloitte’s approval and shall require the Student to provide personal information to Deloitte in order to undergo security and reference checks.  If the first prize-winner does not pass the necessary security and reference checks, and/or is unable to attend the work experience and/or chooses not to take up the work experience there will be no substitute for this prize and Deloitte may, in its absolute discretion, offer this part of the prize to another Student.  The work experience element of the first prize shall not constitute an offer of employment.

Judging

16. Each entry shall be judged on four key areas: (i) focus and context; (ii) logic and reasoning; (iii) organisation and presentation; and (iv) innovative and viable recommendations.

17. Students shall only be contacted if they are successful in the competition. 

Other

18. Deloitte reserves the right to reproduce any or all of any essay entered for the competition. In reproducing any written entry Deloitte reserves the right to omit alter paraphrase or delete any part of that essay in its absolute discretion for any reason.

19. Deloitte reserves the right to use the winning written entries and submissions as part of a promotional effort to promote the winners and the competition once the winners have been announced.

20. The competition is being run by Deloitte LLP whose registered office address is 2 New Street Square, London EC4A 3BZ.

21. The competition is entirely separate from Deloitte’s graduate recruitment scheme and entry into the competition does not mean Students have applied to the graduate recruitment scheme.

22. Deloitte’s decision in respect of the competition is final.

23. These rules shall take precedence to all other information about this competition.

24. Deloitte reserves the right to amend these rules without notice at any time.

25. These rules are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

Submission guidlines

All entries need to be emailed to: businesscompetition@deloitte.co.uk  by 26 February 2010 at noon. Please use the following checklist to ensure you have complied with the rules before submitting your application.

  • Entry form - Complete and attach the entry form with your competition submission.
  • Word count - 2,012 word limit excluding references, include a word count on the last page
  • Presentation - Font: Arial, size 10, double line spacing
  • Formats - doc, pdf.
  • Email subject line - University name, first name, last name
  • Header - Name the customer group your submissions focuses on.
  • Footer - First name, last name, university name, page number.
  • Citations - Harvard or numeric referencing method used.
